Beg, Borrow and Steal

I want to borrow like good artists
I want to steal like great artists
Like Picasso who’s contemporaries hid their
unfinished work from him.
Or him taking inspiration from Cezanne.
I want to be like R.Mutt displaying his fountain
ripping from plumbers.

I want to borrow like good artists
I want to steal like great artists
Like Newton accusing Leibniz for the
invention of “the science of fluxions.”
But both were preceded by Madhava, Hui, Chongzi,
Archimedes and Edoxus.

I want to copy like good artists
I want to rip like great artists
Like Jobs ripping Xerox Parc for the Macs
But getting mad at others when others “ripped” him.

Perhaps it isn’t about copying, imitating, inspiring
or borrowing or stealing.
Maybe it’s about able to see far like Einstein
By standing on the shoulders of giants.

Maybe it’s about mixing and remixing
And amalgamating
It’s about ripping off not one or two
but multitude
And creating a palimpsest
developing an unique voice.
A voice that couldn’t exist without
borrowing and copying, and stealing
And mixing and remixing.
I want to copy like good artists
I want to steal like great ones.

Notes: NaPoWriMo 2013 Day 27. . Prompt today was to take a idiom or proverb or a phrase, enter 3 words in search engine, read a few sites, get some phrases and compose a poem. Mine was a last minute rush job.
