Fruits of Palmyra

Palmyra tree nut
under thin yellow streaked skin
lychee like jelly
smooth, mild, flavored fruit, zesty
sap turns heady in evening.

Palmyra City
Tomb of Saint Shabag, succumbed
Temple of Baal, too.
Heritage lost to conflict,
To twisted logic and hate.

Notes: Day 6 of NaPoWriMo prompt was to write about food.  Remembered the Palmyra tree fruit called taad-fali (in Gujarati), taadgola (in Marathi).  Wrote the first tanka on the fruit and thematically connected it to Syrian conflict, and destruction of the Palmyra heritage sites in the second.

Seasonal Conversations in Haikus

Day 14 of NaPoWriMo, straight forward prompt – write a poem in a form of dialogue.  Missed yesterday.  So I guess I am 3 in the hole for the challenge 30 poems in 30 days challenge, so far.

(i) Fall

She: Grey skies are
mainstay, take me away to
some sunnier climes.

He: Must endure blues,
can't abandon work, kids, and
free free snowbirds be.

(ii) Winter

He: Snuggle under the
blanket, warmth of body felt.
Except, those cold feet.

She: No complaining
about cold feet, lest sleep with-
out blanket's preferred.

(iii) Spring

Strolling esplanade
pink cherry blossoms above -
romantic, she said.

He: Love these river
strolls, my hand in hand with you.
Now pass the Kleenex.

(iv) Summer

She: Summer dress check
chilled Lambrusco check, lawn chair
check.  Grill, baby, grill!

He: Grilling's art form
of controlled charring, requires
some recognition.
